This film based on Ladislav Fuks's novel of the same name combines elements of black comedy and horror and is often referred to as a follower of German Expressionist films and also as an example of the Czech New Wave. The Cremator was the Czechoslovak entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 1969 Academy Awards. At the Catalonian International Film Festival Rudolf Hrušínský received the Best Actor Award for his portrayal of the lead character Karel Kopfrkingl and Stanislav Milota was presented with the Best Cinematography Award.
