A Philosophical History

drama/romance/war
The film opens with Litomyšl students in revolt; they are protesting against the decision of the school board to ban the traditional rag day. This rebellion preceded the revolutionary events in Prague in 1848. This, in places humorous and fresh adaptation of Alois Jirásek's novel was received with approval by both critics and the public. The film also started Otakar Vávra's successful directing career. A Philosophical History was presented at the 6th Venice International Film Festival in 1938.
